Internships

An internship is a short-term work experience that helps students gain exposure and experience in a field of interest, where they often receive guided learning and the opportunity to build skills. Internships are typically aligned with an area of study. Internships can be paid, unpaid, and/or offered for course credit. They can also be connected to a cohort with other interns or just a single intern working with a person or team within an organization. They can be remote or in-person. The most important aspect, is that you as a student will have the opportunity to expand your resume, apply your learning and determine if a specific career path is right for you.

Internship opportunities can be remote or in-person. They can be just a few hours a week or full-time. Internships frequently pay you for your time and effort – getting paid to learn and develop your skills! And they can serve as a way for you to explore a career you are interested in without having to fully commit.

Internships for Academic Credit

In order to get academic credit for an internship experience, you must enroll in internship units PRIOR to the semester you plan to do internship credit by connecting with your academic advisor, completing the required paperwork and getting the experience approved by the internship coordinator for your academic program. For any internships for academic credit, the University of Arizona requires an academic component to the course, meaning once you are enrolled, you will have an actual course with assessments paired with your learning experience outside of the University. Review the following important details regarding enrollment in an internship course for credit:

• You must enroll in academic credit prior to the semester in which you want to receive internship credit.
• You will need to submit an Internship Work Plan and it will need to be approved by your program’s internship coordinator prior to enrollment. Refer to your CAST academic advisor to identify your internship coordinator.
• The number of units you receive is based on the total number of hours you plan to intern with an organization. 45 hours of interning = 1 unit of academic credit.
• The deadline for enrolling in academic credit for an internship is the same as they are for an academic course in a given semester. Visit the Registrar’s Office website to learn more.
• The cost of enrolling in internship credit is the same as it would be for enrolling in any course through the University of Arizona. Visit the UArizona Tuition Calculator to learn more.
• To learn how academic credit fits in your program of study, connect with your CAST academic advisor.

Please note: The University of Arizona is not able to award credit retroactively because of the academic component requirement. Be sure to enroll prior to your internship experience if you wish to receive academic credit.

With questions pertaining to internships for academic credit, refer to your academic advisor or the internship coordinator for your academic program
