A bachelor’s degree in applied sciences requires significant field experience with seasoned mentors. Mentors who can model and supervise interns as they develop professionally and assist graduates to be workplace ready and/or ready for the rigors of graduate school.

Human Services BAS Field Experience Requirements

The Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE) requires that students complete 350 hours of field experience prior to graduation. This requirement is separated into two categories: Previous Relevant Experience (215 hours) and HUSV493 Internship Class (135 hours). 

HUSV493: Internship in Human Services (135 hours): 

In this experience, students are mentored by a faculty supervisor and an approved internship field-site supervisor in 135 hours of internship work (for a 3-credit internship). Students will also, via the online component of HUSV 493 through D2L, connect with their peers to discuss experiences, observations, challenges, and successes, and participate in professional development activities.

The internship is a cooperative effort undertaken by various community agencies, CAST, the Human Services program, and you (the student), in fulfilling the following objectives:

Pre-requisites (for students admitted to the Human Services program in or after Spring 2022):

To enroll in HUSV 493, students must have:

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Completed at least one semester at UA
  • Completed both HUSV 301 and HUSV 326
  • A minimum of 30 or more units completed
  • An approved Internship Work Plan

3-credit internship course expectations:

  • Successful completion of 135 hours of field experience completed simultaneously during the online course component (HUSV 493).
  • Bi-weekly field hours may be flexible. On average, aim to complete 9 hours of work per week for 15 weeks.
  • Weekly input to the D2L course site; discussions and assignments.
  • Completion of professional development modules.
  • Establishment and practice of a self-care plan.
  • A final written internship report.
  • A final oral presentation of your internship experience.

To enroll in HUSV493, you must: 

  • Meet with your academic advisor who will verify you have met the requirements for enrollment 
  • Meet with the CAST Internship Coordinator who will support you in using your resources to identify an internship location and review the UA’s Internship Work Plan 
  • Submit the completed Internship Work Plan, including a signature from your internship supervisor, to the CAST Internship Coordinator and have it approved by your department 
  • The CAST Internship Coordinator will work with your academic advisor to enroll you in the course 
  • Please note: You cannot self-enroll in internship courses. We can only complete enrollment with an approved Internship Work Plan.
