Course Description

CYBV 351 is an elective course that will provide students an in-depth look at Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and Electronic Warfare (EW) from a strategic, operational, tactical, and technological aspect, including the role of electromagnetic energy in SIGINT and EW operations. Students will use a combination of assessments, research, and practical exercise to gain a holistic view of SIGINT and EW applications in the National Intelligence Enterprise.

Learning Outcomes

The student will:

  • Explain how SIGINT and EW supports decision-making and national security,
  • Discuss the challenges of conducting SIGINT and EW operations in today’s modern battlefield and in the pre-conflict and gray zone competitive environment.
  • Examine and evaluate the science and technology that is required for effective SIGINT and EW operations.
  • Examine and evaluate the capabilities and limitations of SIGINT and EW and what each contributes to multi-domain operations at the operational and tactical levels of war.
  • Examine the importance of synchronizing operations that leverage/rely on electromagnetic signals/energy.

Course Objectives

The student will:

  • Examine and evaluate the science and engineering behind SIGINT and EW and the various military applications.
  • Explain how the electronic order of battle is developed and integrated into EW and SIGINT.
  • Analyze scenarios to determine how SIGINT collection and SIGINT operations are used to ensure information requirements are fully satisfied.
  • Examine and evaluate how the Intelligence, operations, and targeting cycle complement one another in the conduct of SIGINT and EW operations.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of SIGINT and EW at the operational and tactical level, especially considering denial and deception.
  • Examine the SIGINT and EW national security organizations and structures and evaluate the authorities and missions that enable SIGINT and EW at the lowest level.
